I am conflicted about this episode. It was good on its own, for most of it, but also kind of unsatisfying. I understood why Amber!Lincoln would want to wander off and help out in Red!verse and his interactions with Liv and Red!Lincoln were pretty great, so all of that was really fun. There were some pretty great character moments in there: Tyrone, and the conversations where the two Lincolns are trying to work out why they are different (plus Liv telling them to stop flirting!) and I LOVED Liv just taking the sniper the fuck down because competence is always my favourite.
Even the main plot was okay. I definitely want more on the shapeshifters and their plan and so on and I'm pretty excited that they've got at least some kind of HQ? And red!Nina? So they should have some kind of chance to learn something, unless red!Broyles does something about that. And how have they not noticed that he's slightly off yet? I really thought, when Altstrid came into the room all freaked out, right after they'd had the conversation about who knew that the shapeshifter was there, that she was going to reveal that she'd worked it out. Instead we only had the saddest of moments, though it would be nice if it turned out to be a didn't-see-the-body-means-not-dead kind of death because I liked red!Lincoln!
So that was upsetting and I didn't really like that the ep failed to really DEAL with things. Grazing Day was funny, but Olivia is still forgetting shit! This should be bad! And she's being really weird about it, all "I had meaningful conversations? Welp, don't remember!" which I'd like to think is the writers indicating that not all is well, but I can't tell if they just don't realise that that's a shitty thing to say and are trying too hard to set up red!Olivia and blue!Lincoln. Which isn't a terrible ship, they're pretty funny together and I did like that he is awkward about coming back and realises that it's kind of awful for him to be like "can I replace him?" I just want there to be a shitton more build up, if that's the direction they want to go in.
We also didn't really get anywhere with working out what Jones was up to. The emo failed shapeshifter wasn't actually connected to him (though that was a lovely ruse when he gets in there disguised as the sniper to sell them out) and we know that there are lots of shapeshifters, but we already knew that. I have hopes that this was intended to be set-up for all of those revelations to happen, but I'd have liked them to work out at least a little bit of it all during the ep. Jones still doesn't really seem to have a plan, except maybe to bring the two universes together? But we don't know why, especially as shit is going so much better in red!verse now (which was a detail I liked. It makes so much sense and it kind of makes everything more fraught because having to be grateful toward people you don't really like is dreadful.)
I guess what it comes down to is that the ep was really fun to watch, but it doesn't feel like there was that much there? Except for character development of both Lincolns, which I did like, but was mostly only rescued by the actor being great because it was done a bit quickly. Also it ended with red!Lincoln getting shot, of which I do not approve.
Also last week's Community was great. They always do the most note-perfect parodies of things and the war documentary was particularly sharp.
