You're kinder than I am. I do think he's rushing right now and trying to give people happy endings before he has to stop writing about them, but I also can't help thinking that he used to know you can't make a happy ending with a pretty speech. Sure, you make the speech. But then people grumble and actual change takes longer than that and it feels like less of a happy ending to me to leave the dwarves on this dramatic precipice than it did when we could actually see the slow march of progress in their society. It is one more sad thing about his illness, but I'm still annoyed by it.
