There's a hockey prompt fest going on over here. If you want to leave me/someone else something, it's still going pretty strong.

My thread is here, but I'm reposting my ficlets below because I can.

So far I've written 3 things, all short and fluffy.

Say it like you mean it (Sidney Crosby/Matt Duchene) )

between the lines (Matt Duchene/Gabe Landeskog) )

Not!fic set after these wings are nothing like a gift (Paul Martin/James Neal, post-wingfic) )

I'm enjoying Welcome to Night Vale a lot. I'm not very far into it so far, but the pastiche of community radio is spot-on, and I really appreciate that it punches up its shadowy and inexplicable conspiracies with an onslaught of cryptic details, rather than trying to wring too much drama out of a small number of very creepy things. I hadn't previously thought about it, but once they do it, it becomes obvious that audio horror needs to take the opposite tack to visual horror and talk all the time about what is there, rather than trying to keep everything in the shadows as much as possible. Very interesting.

People keep recommending Orphan Black to me, and it sounds good, but, well, I watched about half the first ep and I really need someone to tell me if it's all going to be people trying to pass themselves off as other people. I just get too worried and twitchy to watch hours of that kind of infiltration. It's irrational, I know.

The NHL is having wild flailing drama over trades/signings as was anticipated. I find it hard to do anything but laugh, because it's all so ludicrous, and the interesting narratives won't shake out properly for another few months. Kind of mad that the Avs didn't take Jones, but on the other hand, the likelihood that they wouldn't have done something batshit with him is low. Also the Oilers seem to have done nothing truly inexplicable yet, which is better than I would have expected.

I love the hell out of genderswap in general, but I am baffled by the number of hockey genderswaps where players have some kind of elaborate system of braids or buns to keep their hair back when they play. Firstly, think about how long tons of male players keep their hair, and secondly, have they not seen female hockey players who mostly manage to keep long hair out of their faces just fine with a ponytail? (See also: 90s Jagr.) Hair is just not that big of a deal once you've got a helmet on top of it. Braid crowns are difficult to keep in place, and mean that there's a pointy-ish bit of metal against your scalp if something smashes into your helmet.

Also I don't understand the point of genderswapping Elizabeth Bennett because that removes the entire impetus of the plot of P&P.

I wrote more wingfic. I blame Aria for telling me that Nealer needed to deal with wings from all directions. Also for allowing me to title everything with puns. Love you!

Also I finally managed to finish Queen Victoria's Book of Spells, entirely because it needs to go back to the library tomorrow. I'm still grumpy about the amount of infodumping, but [personal profile] kyriacarlisle was right that at least the last story in the book wasn't unrelentingly bleak. I'm more or less okay with certain kinds of bleakness, like the story about the factory girl with phossy jaw where we all know she's never going to get cured, though that one could also have done with an editor to take a firm hand to entire pages of textbook prose about the Irish Potato Famine, but I just wanted to read about one damn relationship where people didn't love potion each other into friendship or marriage. These turned out to be few and far between. So, uh, warnings for assault, everybody!
opusculasedfera: Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in copper and blue Oilers uniforms hug on the ice after a goal. (hockey)
I am the absolute worst at remembering to post when I have things to say, goddamn.

Belated shouting about Worlds: The infinite number of pictures of Taylor Hall making sure he's firmly between Matt Duchene and Jordan Eberle has reminded me that all excuses about Hallsy/Ebs not having sufficient conflict for fic pale under Hallsy's incredible jealousy. Actually, in general, there should be more Worlds fic, especially when people are complaining that the NHL schedule is too tightly regimented to allow for free plotting. I'm just saying.

My memory is terrible in other ways too, sadly. I need to set myself reminders that I actually really like Seanan McGuire's Toby Daye books. Every time I finish one, it takes me a million years to read the next one, and I have no idea why. I like them! Once I start reading them, I finish them incredibly fast. But it takes me a million years to arrange to get the next one out of the library, and then I leave it around the house for weeks before reading it, like it's a chore, rather than something I devour in minutes once given a chance. Also certain terrible people have made me want Toby/Luidaeg, which I didn't see before, but which is ALL OVER An Artificial Night, holy shit. (Yes, I just read it. Yes, I am very behind. See: topic of paragraph.)

This is not a very interesting post, but people should talk to me about these things if they want to anyway? I am mostly trying to get back in the rhythm of remembering how posting worked and actually writing down thoughts instead of vaguely intending to make posts. :/

Honour Among Punks by Guy Davis and Gary Reed is a comic about an AU punk rock female Sherlock Holmes. It's pretty fun, and actually does some interesting things with the Sherlock archetype.

Firstly, it's very, very AU. Sherlock is Sharon Ford, Watson is Susan Prenderghast, a med student from the States, and it adds Sam, Sharon's girlfriend. They live in a world that seems to have gone straight from the Victorians to the punks without any of the intervening social movements, which is fine, for a comic that mostly wants to deal with the amusing contrast between punks and dudes in 3-piece suits and hats, and have occasional dirigibles.

There are some great things. I really enjoyed how Sharon is not an independent operative because due process and the rule of law are just too, too tedious for us smart people. She has reasonable criticisms about the police as they are (there's corruption, there's bias, there's a refusal to actually learn things about subcultures that might affect your deductions, etc.), and therefore works independently in order to attempt to fix these absences. But she doesn't think that vigilante justice is a great idea either, which is a refreshingly sensible attitude.

It's also fantastic in terms of pictures of people with lots of different kinds of bodies dressing however the fuck they want. The bodies under the punk gear feel real and solid, and it's pretty good at not judging them for how they look in the clothes, unless it's people who are explicitly uncomfortable in them.

It has some problems. cut for transfail and spoilers )

The first half is great though, and some of the stand-alone art in the collected volume is wonderfully striking.

--

Genevieve Valentine's Mechanique is about a post-apocalyptic travelling circus, and firmly in the tradition of "you know what would be great? If society came back." (Spoilers: it doesn't, not exactly, but, nevertheless, being able to hold people together to make things and create social groups is seen as a valuable skill.) It has massively, amazingly competent characters doing their best, and, while many of them have their own ends in mind, it doesn't presuppose that working together is for saps, and some of their ends are allowed to be unity and building and trying to fix shit.

It's a bit grim, in that way that apocalypses tend to be, but not unnecessarily grim, or grim for the fun of it.

--

Learning things about hockey has made being in Canada odd. It shows up in ways that I never noticed before. Like a random book on language politics suddenly being super excited that Sid does French interviews as well as English. (It was from 2005, so the author had not yet had his hopes dashed.) Or 25 foot tall Jonathan Toews in the Canadian Tire. This isn't meaningful, I've just been finding it startling because these things have happened several times in the last couple of days.

Rereading Gordon Korman because, come on, should we not all be rereading Gordon Korman constantly? Comfort reading ftw.

I really want fic about Commando (The Twinkie Squad) and Sam (No Coins, Please) meeting in university and becoming angry queer activists together! Commando has the encyclopaedic knowledge of the US political landscape! Sam has the rage against the machine! Together they make angry flyers, and Sam makes fun of Commando for living in a country without healthcare!

I can't decide if it ends Sam/Commando, or if Commando and Douglas are still my OTP, and Sam is just his activist soulmate. In any case this fic doesn't have a plot, and would be hard to write, and also no one would read it, but I want it really badly.

It will have to go in the list of other fics I want, but that don't have a real plot. A small selection of same:

is a thing that is happening! Stop by, if it seems like it's your sort of thing; there have already been excellent fics written!

Also I am experimenting with twitter because it does seem to be a thing that is happening to fandom. I am [twitter.com profile] opusculasedfera. It currently contains basically nothing, but I will attempt to actually use it in the future (once I get over the incredible creepiness of the way it asks me to follow people I know offline, which grosses me the fuck out), so if you have a fannish twitter, let me know?
opusculasedfera: PK Subban in hockey gear (PK)
It turns out that the reason this fic does not work, despite my having written it twice, in both relevant POVs, is because the problem was not the POV, but that it needs to be maybe 10k of feelings and plot, instead of entirely porn. (The number is an extreme ballpark: I have, as yet, written none of the version that has an actual plot, and am choosing instead to whine to dw/lj about it.) There will probably be porn in it in addition to the feelings, but that isn't really a comfort at this point.

I'm really only still attached to it after all of this fuss because I think there needs to be more (any) PK/Stamkos in this fandom. This doesn't really make it easier to write, but at least I know now? So maybe, eventually, in a long damn time, this will be fic? *sigh*

Hockey fandom really, really needs to read Ken Campbell and Jim Parcels' Selling the Dream: How Hockey Parents and Their Kids Are Paying the Price for Our National Obsession. It's both a terrifying look at the systems that produce NHL players, and a wonderful source of bizarre facts about current players.

Essentially, the system, as it currently stands, is kind of fucked )

Campbell and Parcels do spend what seems like an excessive amount of time arguing with Malcolm Gladwell )

On a less depressing note, this book is also a delightful source of peculiar hockey-player facts. Some of it is evidence that particular guys' parents were kind of obsessive (though for me, no one beats the couple who lived in a boat in the Toronto Harbour for a couple of years so their son could play in the GTHL.)

Among others: Matt Duchene, Carey Price, Stamkos, the Staals, Giroux, and Ryan O'Reilly )

1They also keep criticising his statistic that nearly the entire roster of the Medicine Hat Tigers - as a random example - was born before August, by pointing out that Tyler Ennis (Oct 6) was actually one of the few guys off that team to make the NHL, which is a terrible fucking point to make off a dude who has publically complained that he spent his childhood getting cut from teams before he ever got a chance to try out entirely because he was "too short" (he is now 5'9"). He's not exactly your poster-boy for the idea that parents don't need to get involved.

I finally finished reading Ankaret Wells' The Maker's Mask. I have no idea why it took me so long to read because every time I picked it up it was fabulous. Strongly reminded me of Kirstein's Steerswoman books, in the best possible way. Spoilers for both follow )

Something more closely resembling a review, though decidedly scattered: Spoilers for the Maker's Mask only ) Highly recommended, and I'm looking forward to reading the sequel.

I have no words for that Avs-Oilers game last night. It was ridiculous in all the best ways, though I am divided between delight over the Oilers' comeback and how well (nearly) everyone was doing (Nuge scoring! Maggie having a second big goal! Hemmer and Ebs with two each!), and the strong feeling that Dutchy is going to stab someone if the Avs don't start improving soon (and I really don't know if they can, after their completely unbelievable slew of injuries).
opusculasedfera: Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in copper and blue Oilers uniforms hug on the ice after a goal. (hockey)
Can we just ban the Oilers from blocking shots? They don't seem to be very good at it and they keep injuring themselves. They are literally going to run out of guys if they don't cut this out. /o\ Seriously, it can't be worse to lose with slightly more goals against than it's going to be to play without ALL OF YOUR PLAYERS if you keep letting them get injured.

It's great that some of their AHL guys are getting chances, but couldn't it happen because of something other than the regular roster dropping like flies? :(

Also I don't understand why athletics companies are really keen on the idea of guys training in abandoned buildings, but I enjoy how into the crackships they are?

(Just look at their faces at the end there. How is there not porn already?)
opusculasedfera: Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in copper and blue Oilers uniforms hug on the ice after a goal. (oilers)
I'm not sure how I feel about this book. It's certainly different from other Pratchett: a lot less meta, a lot more SF. It's not bad at all...

The essential premise is that humanity finds itself able to 'step' sideways onto alternate Earths and voila, enormous, unimaginable social change. Which is all very well and good. The problem is that, in order to demonstrate the scope of the social change, the first bit of the book spends a LONG time introducing more and more characters. Which is generally Pratchett's strong suit, but perhaps he was restraining himself from wackiness because this is a book ostensibly set in the near-future of our Earth, only it meant that his protagonists seemed quite a lot duller than his minor characters who actually seemed to have strong opinions and interests.

Once the plot properly picked up, the book improved dramatically. spoilers )

When the sequels come out, I'll probably get around to reading them, it wasn't a bad book. But it was the sort of SF that is very much about thinking through a set of ideas rather than characters, or even plot, and I found that the angle at which Pratchett and Baxter came at those ideas seemed quite off to me.

The Canes won last night, which was delightful, and also the Canes' announcers (who are a joy in general) seem really, really determined to make me ship EStaal/Sasha. Seriously, they will not stop talking about how well they play together and how good their communication and chemistry is. There's also so much gushing over how EStaal apparently praises Sasha to them, and now I really want the fic where EStaal has too many feelings about how great having Sasha on his line is and this somehow ends in makeouts?

The Oilers are much more tragic because holy shit, boys, what the fuck is D, do you even know? But Dubi has been seriously excellent and made them way less tragic than they could have been, and Gags has a nine game point streak which is not bad at all and makes me ludicrously happy for him. Also I have a lot of feelings about Nail being an candidly Muslim player and what that means in Canada (Nail retweeted this, which he does for a lot of fans, but it's still delighting me.)
opusculasedfera: PK Subban in hockey gear (PK)
No, seriously, I feel like a badass and also Uhura because I fixed my computer! With SOLDERING! (Admittedly, and some assistance as I've never soldered before, but I don't feel that that diminishes my triumph as much as it diminishes my chance of setting something on fire like an idiot.) The wires to my power jack came unsoldered and I fucking FIXED THEM. :DDD Also now my computer doesn't seem to be randomly complaining that it's about to run out of power because things came loose so high fives all round.

Furthermore, [tumblr.com profile] mistfarer made this:

[photoset of pictures of various combinations of Steven Stamkos, PK Subban, Michael Del Zotto, Jeff Skinner, Tyler Seguin, John Tavares, James Neal, Paul Bisonnette, and Sam Gagner looking happy]

and we agree that all the fic based on it should exist? There are so many goofy pictures of these guys together! They've known each other forever nd they talk on twitter all the time! There should definitely be fic about summer shenanigans in Toronto and/or ridiculous people trying to have long-distance relationships.

Fic!

Hello to anyone who found me through [personal profile] kouredios's friending meme! Please feel free to hang out, comment, lurk, whatever you please. I post far too infrequently, but I'm trying to change that.

In that spirit:

The thing that amuses me most about this tweet, besides Hallsy's terrible chirping skills,

[description: Picture of RNH surrounded by reporters, retweeted by Taylor Hall who has added "why so many reporters?"]
is that it reminds me that the World Juniors selection camp was for-real front page news in Canada (below the fold, I will grant you), including an enormous section on how amazing it's going to be if Nuge plays, and it hasn't even happened yet. I mention this because I feel that the non-Canadian hockey people on my flist should know how thoroughly Canada can live up to its stereotypes. *g*

Elementary is still interesting, though I find myself failing to keep up properly and ending up watching two or three episodes at once at intervals. I think it's improving though. The plots seem to be getting better and Joan is getting a ton more to do. They're getting better at longform character arcs too. spoilers for 1x09 )

Still vaguely watching Elementary. Not sure what I think. spoilers )

More ridiculously, I've also spent the last few days watching all of Oil Change. I admire their attempts to turn two disappointing seasons into an uplifting narrative, but it can be a little silly. As much as I enjoyed a lot of it (mostly the bits everyone has already seen, like Hall/Eberle house tour), I can't get over things like this gem:

where they genuinely try to convince us that Taylor Hall getting a skate to the face in practice was evidence of leadership. Which, no. I'm willing to believe that he is a leader in other ways, but, y'know, not through skates to the face. No one should be following his lead on that.
